Has your off-the-wall puppy traded chasing squirrels for watching passing cars as she matured? We asked project participants how active they thought their dog was before starting the project and measuring activity with Whistle. In this post, we explore differences between owners’ perception of what dogs do and what their Whistle FITs actually say - helping us understand the life of our dogs when we’re away.
Thanks to our participants and the new detection abilities of Whistle, we’re able to explore the daily behaviors of tens of thousands of dogs in incredible detail, with over 29 trillion movements detected and quantified in 2018! It can be easy to lose the individual stories of our participants in those giant numbers, so we explored a year in the life of Vitas - one of our canine colleagues at Whistle - through the lens of his behavior data. Vitas’ experienced a big life event this year, and his Pet Insight-enabled Whistle was able to highlight the impact of this life event on his daily habits.
The daily activity goal is a core part of Whistle that we’ve designed to encourage active lifestyles and help make sure pets (and their parents) are getting the regular exercise they need to be happy and healthy. Our data science team explored the data behind the activity goal to see how the daily goal impacts our users’ activity habits. Spoiler alert: the daily activity goal motivates pet owners to give their pet some extra exercise to hit their goal!
Pet Insight Project is collecting billions of data points from tens of thousands of participants, but we know that each dog has a special story that can’t be told through sensors and medical records alone.
We spoke with the human spokespeople (and loving owners) of a couple of very good Pet Insight dogs to learn more about their unique stories and how Pet Insight Project has influenced the way they care for each other.
In recognition of the important contributions of project participants, we’re teaming up with Wisdom Health, the leader in canine DNA testing, to offer a special reward to "citizen scientists" who provide long-term, consistent data about their dogs' behaviors. Participants who achieve certain Whistle usage milestones will be eligible to receive a free WISDOM PANEL Health canine DNA test. WISDOM PANEL tests your dog’s DNA with a simple cheek swab to determine the breed ancestry and genetic health. Learn more about WISDOM PANEL and canine DNA testing here.
At the core of Pet Insight Project is the principle that dogs show changes in behavior when they experience a change in wellness. That’s something both veterinary professionals and pet owners know and understand intuitively when something seems “off” about a dog, but we historically haven’t been equipped to objectively measure and evaluate these behavior changes. This weekend we’ll be at the American Veterinary Medical Association Convention in Denver, Colorado talking to veterinary professionals about how medical histories can act as “maps” to uncover and measure behavioral change. Here’s a sneak peek of what we’ll share.
